Many years ago, I wrote a blog about food and its impact on life after watching my son struggle with how his gut affected his mood, his behavior, and his overall well-being. https://www.aaatkinsonperry.com/food-and-its-impact-on-life/ At the time, it fascinated me how something happening physically inside the body could disrupt the mind so deeply. As a parent, I had to help him navigate it because he was too young to understand what was happening himself. Looking back now, I realize that experience taught me something much bigger about the connection between the body and the mind.
Recently, I have been thinking about the opposite side of that equation. If the body can impact the mind, then surely the mind can impact the body. I believe many of us are walking around carrying thoughts, emotions, fears, stress, and negativity that quietly spread “sick” throughout our bodies without us even realizing it. You may not notice it at first. It may start with exhaustion, headaches, tension in your shoulders, sleepless nights, irritability, anxiety, or simply feeling emotionally drained. Sometimes we blame work, life, age, or responsibilities, but often the source is deeper than that. Sometimes it is what we are feeding our minds every single day.
There is a reason people say, “think happy thoughts.” It sounds simple, almost childish at times, but there is truth in it. The mind is powerful. What we think influences how we feel, and how we feel influences how we function. I am sure there are countless scientific studies that explain the chemical reactions tied to stress, fear, joy, and peace. We hear all the time about stress-related illnesses, panic attacks, high blood pressure, burnout, and depression. The body responds to what the mind carries.
I have become very protective of my peace over the years. Not because life is perfect, but because I now understand how dangerous constant negativity can be. Negative thoughts have a way of multiplying if left unchecked. Negative people, aka the energy vampires, can drain your energy without even touching you. Toxic environments can slowly reshape your thinking until anxiety and frustration become your normal state. Think about it, there is that one negative person in the group at work or in your circle of friends, and when they leave the group feels lighter. Look back, and you will realize what I’m saying is true.
I try very hard to keep negative thoughts and negative people out of my surroundings because those negative vibes wreak havoc on my mental health and, by extension, my life. That does not mean I ignore reality or pretend difficult things do not exist. Life will always have challenges. There will always be disappointment, heartbreak, setbacks, and uncertainty. But I have learned that what surrounds you matters deeply.
The conversations you entertain matter.
The content you consume matters.
The people you allow close to you matter.
Even the words you repeatedly tell yourself matter. https://www.aaatkinsonperry.com/the-power-of-words/
Sometimes we become so accustomed to chaos that peace feels unfamiliar. We normalize stress. We laugh off exhaustion. We dismiss emotional pain because everyone else seems to be struggling too. But our bodies are always listening to our minds, even when we are trying to ignore what is happening internally.
I think that is why peace is so important. Real peace. Not the kind we perform for social media, but the kind that allows your mind to rest without constantly anticipating conflict, disappointment, or hurt. Peace allows the body to breathe. It allows healing.
As adults, unlike children, we often have the ability to make choices about what we expose ourselves to. We can step away from harmful environments. We can set boundaries. We can protect our energy. We can choose what we feed our minds just as carefully as we choose what we feed our bodies.
I am still learning this every day. Some days are easier than others. But I know now that protecting your mental space is not weakness or selfishness. It is necessary. Because when the mind suffers long enough, eventually the body begins to suffer too. The body and mind are not separate battles. They are deeply connected parts of the same journey.
I genuinely want to know your thoughts, and I’m sure others do too. Feel free to comment 👍🏽, but if you’re not comfortable sharing, please reach out to me through any medium. I’d be thrilled if you could share something, anything, and let others know. Your comments help me understand your perspective and often present a completely different view on the topic. They could even inspire another blog. 😉 And you never know how your comment might benefit others. Remember, life is meant to be lived, and you should always strive to live your best life. #lifeisforliving #liveyourbestlife #gratefulforlife #faithgreaterthanfear
See you next Wednesday at 8:00 p.m., Bogotá time.
So true my friend, even thought time passes your body records every negative comment, and action..
I didnt think about it like feeding your mind as you feed your body.. we make those choices everyday , and carefully select our food to prevent the cholesterol etc, and in the same.way we should be selective about what we feed our minds.
Thanks Andrea for always planting a seed of thought.
You are welcome my friend. We must protect both mind and bodies. If we don’t then 🤷🏽♀️
