Someone sent me a video recently. It was about hope. As soon as I watched it, I thought, “ I have to write about this.” Then another thought came to me. Surely I had already written a blog called Hope, which is fundamental to me. After all these years, it didn’t seem possible that I hadn’t. So I searched my blogs before I started writing. To my surprise, there wasn’t one.
There were blogs where hope found its way into the conversation. It appeared alongside faith, change, relationships, disappointments, and new beginnings. But there wasn’t one simply called Hope. So today, let’s talk about hope, and not our friend, we all have at least one friend with the name. I have often wondered what hope really is. Is it simply wishing for something better? Is it believing that everything will work out? Or is it something much deeper than that?
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that hope is what keeps everything else alive. Without hope, peace slowly slips away. Faith becomes harder to hold on to. Joy becomes more difficult to find. Even love can struggle when there is no hope left. Hope doesn’t just help us survive. I think it allows everything else in our lives to thrive.
The Bible speaks about hope many times. One verse that immediately comes to mind is 1 Corinthians 13:13:
“And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
I know love is described as the greatest, and rightly so. But today my thoughts have settled on hope. What happens to us when we lose it? Sometimes we don’t stop living. We still go to work. We still smile. We still do what needs to be done. But inside, something begins to fade. Maybe not physically. But mentally. Spiritually. Emotionally.
Without hope, it becomes difficult to believe that tomorrow can be different from today. Hope has always been a linchpin in my own life. Without it, I would have given up on many things long ago. People who know me well have heard me say more than once, “I live in perpetual hope.” It’s something I have said for years. Some people smile when they hear it. Others probably think I’m being overly optimistic. But that’s not really it. Living in perpetual hope doesn’t mean I ignore reality. It doesn’t mean I don’t have difficult days or moments when I question things. It simply means I choose to believe that my current circumstances are not necessarily my final destination. It means I believe God is still working, even when I cannot see what He is doing. Hope keeps me grounded. It reminds me that every closed door isn’t the end of the story.
That unanswered prayer isn’t always an unanswered life. That difficult seasons don’t last forever. Maybe that’s why hope is so important. Maybe God knew we would need it every single day.
So today, I’m wondering…
How do you see hope?
What does hope mean to you?
Has hope ever carried you through a season when you thought you couldn’t take another step?
See you soon! Join me again next Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. (Bogotá time) for another reflection on life, faith, growth and the lessons we learn along the way. Until then, hold on to hope. Sometimes it’s the smallest thing that carries us the longest distance. If this week’s reflection encouraged you, there are many more thoughtful reflections in my book, “Thoughts on Life”, now available.
Before you go, I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts. Please leave a comment below. Every perspective is valuable, and your insights often help me see things in a completely different way. If you’re not comfortable commenting publicly, feel free to reach out to me through any medium. I’d love to hear from you.
Your feedback not only encourages me, but it may also inspire a future blog and help someone else who reads it. You never know how your words might make a difference.
Remember, life is meant to be lived, so always strive to live your best life.
