The Serenity Prayer – God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.

Reinhold Niebuhr

I have always liked this prayer from I was a child and as I listened to it earlier some questions came to me. I wanted to know what you thought.

This prayer is so powerful in it’s simplicity. It’s the perfect way to live life. Be calm and accept the things you can’t change (especially others). It makes no sense fighting what we cannot change. The thing is when we can make the change will we have the courage to actually do so? This change might upend our lives and would we want to do that? We like it when things remain as they have always been. Habits are comforting. https://www.aaatkinsonperry.com/change/. It’s really important to think about that especially when it will make the difference in how happy or unhappy you are at the end of the day. Now the major question is how do we know the difference. How will we be wise enough?

What is wisdom? I am thinking it could be thought of as common sense and sound knowledge. But how does one gain wisdom? Does one need to be old to be wise or can one gain wisdom when young? Is wisdom something taught, innate or is it gained from your learnt and lived experiences? Is it something given by that higher being or something all humans have or can/should have? If it’s given to all humans why is it that some exhibit wisdom and others don’t show a iota? 🤔. Is it learnt in books or from life?

I ask these questions as I contemplated this prayer. Does serenity come with wisdom? Or does one need to be serene to attract wisdom? Lord knows serenity is not the easiest thing to acquire. Some seem to have it naturally and other like myself took a while to learn. When you learn should you not share with others? Or should you just keep this knowledge to yourself?

My daughter says when she thinks of wisdom she thinks of old men with long beards. Do you agree or can you be young and be wise beyond your years?

I really want to know what you are thinking, and I know others do too. Try commenting 👍🏽, but if you are not comfortable, reach out to me via any medium. Your comments let me know how you feel and very often give me a total different perspective on the topic. 😉. And you can never tell your comment might help others.
