“I will rest in the eye of the storm.”
Those words from a song sung in church recently have stayed with me. They were simple, but they landed deeply; in fact, they gave me goosebumps. It was not the first time I had heard the song, but it was as if I was really hearing it for the first time. Life, after all, often feels like a storm, with winds howling, waves crashing, and everything around us tossing and turning at once. Sometimes the noise is so loud that it’s hard to hear God at all. The noise of the world helps to drown out everything else, including the voice of the Lord, social media included, especially because of social media for many.
Yet the song reminded me of something powerful: even in the fiercest storm, as we saw in the passing of Hurricane Melissa, there is an eye.
The eye of the storm doesn’t mean the storm is over. It doesn’t mean the winds won’t return or that the waves have disappeared. It means that, right in the middle of chaos, there can be a moment of calm. A pause. A breath. A space where things become peaceful, even if only for a short time.
That is where rest lives.
We often think rest comes after everything is resolved, after the problems are fixed, after the decision is made, after the pain has passed. But what if rest is not a destination at the end of the storm? What if it’s something we’re invited into right in the middle of it?
The eye of the storm is not created by our effort. We don’t force it. We don’t control it. We simply enter it by trusting God enough to stop striving, stop panicking, and stop trying to hold everything together on our own. We have to believe we can let go and let God.
Rest, in that sense, is an act of faith.
When life is unstable, when answers are unclear, when emotions are swirling, rest becomes a declaration: I trust You, God, even here. It says that peace is not dependent on perfect circumstances but on God’s presence.
Those moments of calm may be brief. The storm may resume. But the eye reminds us that peace is possible. Hope is possible. God is still in control, even when everything else feels out of control.
Maybe today your storm hasn’t passed. Maybe the winds are still strong. But perhaps there is an invitation to rest anyway, to step into the eye, to be still, to let God be God.
Because sometimes, the greatest strength we can show is not in fighting harder, but in resting deeper.
And even if it’s only for a moment, that rest can carry us through the storm knowing that God carries us in his/her arms.

See you next Wednesday at 8:00 p.m., Bogotá time.
It is my belief that even as life’s challenges roar and swirl around us, there is peace that passes all understanding that is available at of His name …Abba/ Jesus whatever we choose to call Him. He is at the center of that peace.
Thanks Andrea for this timely reminder
You are welcome. It’s so easy to forget that centre of peace.
This made me reflect on the reading from Matthew 8: 23-26 when Jesus was sleeping in the boat with his disciples, they panicked when the storm came, they woke him up out of fear for their lives, and he made everyone and everything calm again.
Maybe the eye of the storm is that moment when we put all our trust in God, knowing that we will be safe.
So true. It’s not easy trusting although we say should. When we do we will be safe.
