Today is Christmas Eve, and it should be a joyous occasion. Tomorrow is celebrated as the birth of the Christ child, a moment that, for many of us, sits at the very heart of what this season represents. It is meant to be a time of light, hope, love, and deep, unshakable joy.

Joy is such an interesting thing. It is more than laughter, more than gifts under a tree, more than tables filled with food and familiar Christmas music. Joy is a state of being. It is woven into our everyday lives in ways we sometimes overlook. We feel it in small moments, a warm smile, a kind word, shared memories, or even quiet reflection. It is so important to us that we name our children Joy, as if to say, may this be your essence, your inheritance, your gift to the world.

At Christmas time, joy feels amplified. It fills our homes, our churches, our streets, and our hearts. We decorate, we gather, we give, and we remember. We remember why this season exists in the first place, the birth of Christ, a symbol of love given freely, of hope entering the world through humility, of joy arriving not with noise, but with purpose.

But joy should not be seasonal. It should not be packed away with the ornaments once the tree comes down. It should not be reserved for December or tied only to celebration and abundance. True joy is meant to live with us year-round, in January when life feels quiet, in July when the days are heavy, and in the moments when joy feels hardest to hold onto.

Joy does not deny hardship; it exists alongside it. It reminds us that even in uncertainty, we can choose gratitude. Even in pain, we can choose hope. Even in chaos, we can choose love.

As we stand on the edge of Christmas Day, my hope is that we embrace joy not just as a feeling, but as a commitment. A commitment to kindness. To compassion. To faith. To seeing the good, even when it is subtle. To being joy for others when they struggle to find it themselves.

May this Christmas remind us that joy was born into the world not to be fleeting, but to be lived every single day. And may we carry it forward long after the season has passed.

Merry Christmas to all. And for those that don’t celebrate Christmas, have a happy holiday.
