“If You Fail to Plan, You Are Planning to Fail” — Benjamin Franklin.

This is true in all facets of life. It’s hard to go through life without some kind of planning. Well that’s what I think. I however know persons that just go with the flow with no plans. Interestingly these are the persons that wonder why things always seem to go south for them. There is a big difference between planning so as to have you life having some semblance of order and trying to control everything. Planning isn’t trying to control everything but trying to have things in place and ensuring you can mitigate as many risks as possible. It sounds like I’m planning a project, but life has may aspects which I think we could look at like projects. It’s up to us to determine which ones we take on and try to ensure we plan accordingly.

As the quote points out if you don’t plan then you must be planning to fail. It doesn’t mean that the planning is done down to the last detail, it just means that you can’t just go with the flow and expect things to be perfect. Then again there is no such thing as perfect. As we know life is filled with ebb and flow and we do take it as it comes. However sometimes we can and should take charge of our destiny. As the quote from William Ernest Henley notes we can be and should be the captain of our own destiny. “I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.” The only way to do this is to plan. If we have to wait on others to determine where we go and how we get there then we are in trouble. Big trouble.

When we plan it doesn’t mean we do this by ourselves all the time but we do it with others. We should know that we have to focus on ourselves. As I always point out you have to take care of you before you can help anyone else. As they say on the plane “put on your mask before you try to help others.” That is how it should be throughout your life.

I remember reading a study done years ago that focused on college students that planned for life as against others that didn’t and it noted that those that planned did better in life. It’s as if some person feel that they are lucky so no need to plan. Luck is of your own making. When you are prepared and the opportunity presents itself consider yourself lucky. I have had “some lucky breaks” but I know if the opportunity had been given to me but I was not prepared to accept it then I would not have been seen as lucky. It could be considered that the timing was perfect but again if I had nothing to offer then it would not be seen as lucky. That’s what life is like. We have to take whatever is offered and make the most of it. Grab it with both hands and as the Nike ad would say “just do it.”

Luck
