A few days ago, I heard someone talking about the journey from “the bottom of the barrel” to “the top of the pile.” As I listened, one word kept coming to mind: consistency.
It made me think about why I started writing this blog. When I first began, I wasn’t trying to build a following or establish a routine. I simply needed somewhere to place the thoughts that constantly occupied my mind. Writing became my way of moving those thoughts from my head onto paper. It was quiet, personal, and, in many ways, therapeutic.
What I didn’t realise then was that I was developing a new set of mental muscles. I remember someone telling me that I would never be able to produce a quality blog every week, and if I did, it wouldn’t be for very long. Eight year, I think, is not bad at all. They suggested that once a month was far more realistic. To be fair, they weren’t trying to discourage me. They genuinely believed they were giving me honest advice based on what they thought I was capable of. I listened. Then I quietly did my own thing. Not because I wanted to prove anyone wrong, but because I knew this wasn’t about talent. It was about discipline. It was about consistency.
Week after week, I wrote. Some weeks the words came easily. Other weeks they had to be pulled out one sentence at a time. There were days when I questioned whether anyone would even read what I had written. Yet I kept showing up. Isn’t that true of so many things in life?
We often admire the finished product without appreciating the countless ordinary days that made it possible. We celebrate the success but overlook the discipline that quietly built it. Many people want the destination, but not everyone is willing to take the journey. Sometimes we expect opportunities to fall into our laps like manna from the sky. Occasionally they do, but more often they arrive because someone kept working long after the excitement had faded.
Consistency isn’t glamorous. It’s repeating the same effort over and over again, even when no one notices. It’s choosing to improve by a small amount every day, trusting that those small steps will eventually become something significant. Along the way, some people may think you’re wasting your time. Others may question why you keep going. A few may even tell you that your efforts aren’t worth it. Should their opinion determine what you pursue?
I’ve learned that trying to please people who have little interest in your dreams is exhausting. The people who matter will encourage your growth. The rest will simply have opinions. So perhaps the better question is this: What do you want? Not what others expect of you. Not what seems easiest. Not what gains the quickest applause.
What do you genuinely want for your life? Once you know the answer, sit with it. Make a plan. Then begin working on it, quietly, faithfully, consistently. Because consistency has a remarkable way of changing us. Long before others notice the results, it changes how we think, how we respond to challenges, and what we believe we are capable of becoming.
Looking back, I realise this blog has never just been about writing. It has been about becoming.
What is one area of your life where consistency could make all the difference? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
See you soon! Join me again next Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. (Bogotá time) for another reflection on life, faith, growth, and the lessons we learn along the way. If this week’s reflection encouraged you, there are many more thoughtful reflections in my book, “Thoughts on Life”, now available.
Before you go, I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts. Please leave a comment below. Every perspective is valuable, and your insights often help me see things in a completely different way. If you’re not comfortable commenting publicly, feel free to reach out to me through any medium. I’d love to hear from you.
Your feedback not only encourages me, but it may also inspire a future blog and help someone else who reads it. You never know how your words might make a difference.
