Have you ever felt that you are always in darkness and then something happens and the light cracks through? It doesn’t have to be something big. It may be a situation you thought would never end, a season of struggle, or a moment where life felt heavy and uncertain. And then, suddenly, a word, a gesture, a breakthrough, or even a quiet realization allows a sliver of light to enter. That light shifts everything. The question that often follows is this: how do we ensure that the light stays, and the darkness doesn’t take over again?

The truth is, life is a constant balance of dark and light. Darkness has a way of creeping in quietly, through our fears, our doubts, even our disappointments, or when we experience fatigue. Light, on the other hand, requires us to be intentional. We have to open our hearts and minds to it. We have to nurture it, feed it, and protect it. Or the darkness will feed on us and suck us dry.

For me, that means leaning into faith and remembering that the light does not come from me alone. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5). Darkness may try to return, but the light is stronger when we anchor ourselves in what is true, good, and life-giving.

Practically, keeping the light alive can look like:

• Surround yourself with people who encourage rather than drain. Stay away from the energy vampires or they will keep you down with them.

• Guard your thoughts and focusing on gratitude, even in small ways. You know how I feel about gratitude. Without it we can achieve nothing. Your mental health is yours to protect at all cost.

• Make space for quiet, prayer, or reflection to reconnect with your source of strength. For me it’s that higher being.

• Allow yourself to celebrate progress instead of only dwelling on problems. Life is meant to be lived and the best way to do that is to be the best you can be and hang on to the things that make life worth living.

The light is not fragile, it is powerful. But it does need our cooperation. When we choose to stay connected to hope, to faith, and to purpose, we strengthen the light within us.

Darkness will come again, because that is life. But once you have seen the light, you know that it is always possible. And each time it cracks through, it reminds us that the story is not over and that we are never truly lost in the dark. It’s just there as a part of the journey.
