Sometimes, people misunderstand silence.
They see it as surrender, as uncertainty, as weakness. But I’ve learned, sometimes the hard way, that silence is often the most powerful tool in the room. It’s not always about having the last word or being the loudest. Sometimes, it’s about knowing when not to speak. When to step back, watch, and when to listen.
There are moments when my silence has spoken louder than any carefully crafted sentence could. In conversations where assumptions were flying, or in rooms where energy was tense, I’ve chosen to hold my peace. Not because I didn’t have something to say, but because what I had to say needed the right moment. Or sometimes, because it didn’t need to be said at all. It also allowed me to keep my mental fortitude.
Silence, for me, has become a form of discernment.
It’s where I regroup, realign, and listen, to myself, to God, to the room, to the energy that words sometimes blur. I’ve learned that silence allows the truth to breathe. It creates a space for reflection instead of reaction. And in that space, I often find clarity and strength.
There’s a kind of quiet confidence that comes from not needing to prove yourself in every moment. Not every comment requires a comeback. Not every accusation needs a defense. Sometimes, the most courageous thing you can do is say nothing and be still.
Don’t get me wrong, I use my voice. I believe in standing up for what matters. But I’ve also learned that the timing and spirit in which we speak can be just as important as the words themselves. And that sometimes, silence is not a lack of strength, but the evidence of it.
So if you find yourself in a season where you’re choosing quiet over chaos, reflection over reaction, know this: your silence does not mean you are weak. It may mean you are finally strong enough to no longer need noise.
Let silence be your strategy. Let it be your sanctuary. Let it remind you: not every battle needs a broadcast.
