One day I walked into someone’s office that I worked with and saw this picture of a old shack on his desktop, so being me I asked why you have that picture of the old shack on your computer? He said “so I will always remember to work hard so I never go back there.” I was surprised and of course had to ask questions. He really was serious. He had lived in the shack with his mother and siblings. His story is like others you might have heard, born and grew up poor but was determined not to stay like that forever. He wanted better for himself and he wanted to ensure his mother would be placed on easy street. He did all he wanted to do and more.

When I thought about it I really realize we do take things for granted especially when you never had to fight to get to where you are. Life just happens and it’s always been easy. It’s not only your life that you end up taking for granted but also the people that are around you, the ones that you profess to love. How do we ensure that we never take the people and even our life for granted? What’s the best way to do this? What happens if we do take what we have for granted? Will we lose what we have?

As I have mentioned in a previous blog http://www.aaatkinsonperry.com/gratitude/ just before I go to sleep at night I thank the lord for my day, for my family and what I have. When I wake up in the morning I thank the lord for allowing me to wake up, for my family and all that I have. That is just the way I am and the way I’m teaching my children. We must always be grateful for what we have. You would be surprised how that helps. Do you take everything for granted or are you grateful?
