I heard my priest talking about endurance one Sunday, and I thought about what it really means to endure. Not just surviving something hard, but choosing to keep going when there’s no applause, no visible reward, and no one watching. When it’s just me and my thoughts.
Endurance, to me, is deeply personal. It’s not always loud or heroic. Sometimes it looks like getting out of bed when you’d rather stay under the covers. But you know life must go on. Other times it’s taking a deep breath when your chest feels tight from life’s weight. It’s showing up, for yourself, your family, your faith, even when you’re tired in ways you can’t explain. You know that bone-deep tired that makes you wonder how to put one foot in front of the other. It’s not physical, it’s mental. Which is the worst kind of tired.
I used to think endurance was all about strength. And maybe it is, but not the kind of strength we usually celebrate. It’s not the kind that flexes its muscles or demands recognition. It’s quiet. It’s patient. It’s often invisible to others.
There are seasons in life where you don’t feel like you’re thriving. You’re just holding on. That used to feel like failure to me. Now, I see it differently. Holding on is something. Sometimes, it’s everything.
Endurance has taught me that it’s okay not to bloom in every season. Some seasons are about roots, not flowers. Some are about holding on until the light breaks through again. And it does, eventually it always does.
So today, if you’re enduring something, I just want to say: I see you. I get it. Keep going. Don’t rush the lesson. Don’t despise the process. There’s purpose in this stretch, even if you can’t see it right now.
Endurance is not just about surviving. It’s about becoming. Becoming the person we are meant to be. The question is who are we really supposed to be?
